Thanks for the help Bruce, Simon and Alexey. I've installed the new drive, which I've partitioned with a GPT, so that now *both* the USB flash boot drive and the rootfs drive are GPTed, which means I've been able to use PARTUUID. All seems well so far. Thanks again. Richard
