Sorry about this.  My bloody email defaults to HTML mail, so I'm constantly

Thanks for a usual thorough reply Ken.   

Yes, this was where the problem lay.  I had PATHS leftover in /etc/.profile 
concerning $XDG_DATA_HOME, such as 'export 
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/opt/kde/share:/usr/local/share/apps:/usr/share:/usr/share/akonadi!'
   When they where deleted everything compiled.

All okay.  Have qt4 and qt5 in /opt and kde4 and kf5 under the same.
