Yes, that fixed it. Everything runs as expected now.
I put X (and I'll be putting the desktop there too) under /opt in case I
just want to get rid of it after trying it out. Right now this is a
learning exercise, even though I find the process of building X and a
dektop a little scary.
After a couple of builds, Xorg is not scary, just long. It's about 50
packages (counting things like xorg-libs as 1) and all of LFS is only 70.
Then you can work on window managers. :)
Building in /opt is good. If something goes wrong, it is easy to just
remove it and start over. Removing it when prefix=/usr is hard.
