OK, I kept hunting. Got a clue about CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE here:

$ cmake --help-manual cmake-variables|less

Then with another clue from the package's INSTALL file:

Configure the build with

    $ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/path/to/your/installation ..

or (if you want to use the default installation path /usr/local)

    $ cmake ..

I tried this in my build script:

(cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release .. |  tee log.conf && exit
$PIPESTATUS) &&

And that went through compilation without failing.

So I guess my question to anybody familiar with cmake is: what have I
produced? Is this likely to be usable as intended? I'm ignorant of
cmake.
TIA!
