I agree. At one time Gnome was OK, but it is completely unusable now IMO.
Try xfce: http://xubuntu.org/
For partitioning, use a livecd and partition before going through the
install procedure: https://livecdlist.com/
I have some friends that really like puppy linux. It is fairly small.
