I had seen that. That is what gave me a clue about what it does,
and why it might be something that may find broader use, ala GTK,
besides the number of optional dependencies in the book. Have you
seen any evidence it's finding wide support in the development
community? (I don't tend to get around much in those circles. I
let the book blaze the trail. ;-) )

I can't say. but there are 73 packages in BLFS that reference it. I do
not see what it hurts to go ahead and add it. It is only two libraries
and five programs used when building other packages.
Now you might get by without it if you do not want any of the packages
where it is required but it does seem pretty embedded in a lot of apps.
