In my experience things are not as bad as this might suggest. For years I have tested Glib with "make -k check" on BLFS systems without D-Bus, desktop-file-utils, or even X. I see a small number of failures that are clearly due to those missing packages, but the rest of the test suite succeeds and I have not seen it hang. This is not proof of anything, of course, but it strongly suggests to me that an unexpected hang in the Glib tests is unlikely to be due to missing packages.
