That's a good idea for dianostic purposes--I'm out.  However, I also
set "nomodesetting" in the kernel boot line.  With mode setting the
old CTL-ALT-(+/-) stopped working for changing screen resolution, which
I seem to do relatively often.  I didn't find having to open an xterm
so I could use xrandr a practical approach.
