Hi, The book itself does not use Java much (fop and its deps), but I know there are Java users among the LFS'ers. So I'd like to ask them a question: OpenJDK for Java 9 has been recently released, and the question is whether to move to Java 9 or to keep Java 8 for the time being. I have no idea of the differences between Java 8 and 9 and of the difficulties to move code from 8 to 9. That's why I ask, before applying the BLFS "update to the most recent release" (loose) policy. IIRC, both proprietary and OpenJDK in the book simultaneously for a while, and then both OpenJDK7 and OpenJDK8 were in the book together. I guess, do you have many apps that require it? I'd guess if a handful of third party apps work, and ITWeb work with what you use, then you should be good at that point to drop 8. Obviously FOP is good test, and Vuze is good to test with as it is big and uses a lot of the external deps, as well as ASDM on a Cisco device to test ITW's WebStart console. Java in the browser is just about dead I think, but WebStart should work for those few remaining sites now. I rarely use any of the above now days.
