Yes, I know the canonical place to ask about latex usage problems is stack exchange - but I find forums awkward, and I know I'll get asked for a MWE [ minimum [not] working example ] - which will take some time to prepare (I need to install fonts on my main machine and then test which do not work, although at the moment I suspect it is only Noto fonts], so I thought I'd ask here just in case ...
Back Story: One of the things I sometimes do beyond BLFS is look at TTF/OTF fonts (to find out what they cover). Details at http://www.zarniwhoop.uk/ttf-otf-notes.html and in particular I have "lorem ipsum" (dummy text) comparisons at http://www.zarniwhoop.uk/files/PDF-lipsum/ - those started out with random text, but last year I decided to convert them all to "standard" text, i.e. the exact same text for each font. The initial stuff used part of lorem ipsum (technically it is dog latin, the first word was broken by a new page), or cat-related text for monospace fonts (managing coders has been compared to herding cats). After doing the basic lorem ipsum text I decided to translate it via google (first to English, then to the desired language) - the text might not make a lot of sense, but it should give a reasonable view of how each font will look. The last time I did that was back in February (LFS-7.10, texlive-2016). The problem: Now I've come back to this and used google to translate the next batch of languages (i.e. the next batch of scripts). But when I copied a file which had worked in February, changed the text and the fonts, and tried to compile it with xelatex I got errors. And the same when I tried what had worked in February. In particular I was using Noto Sans Bengali (the original document), Noto Sans Gujarati (the new one I wanted to create), and Noto Sans itself for the headings [ the language variants of Noto Sans do not cover ASCII ]. For each of these, fontspec could not find the font although fc-list showed they were present. In TL2017 I've tried using fontname.ttf and /usr/share/fonts/Noto/NotoSans{,Something}-Regular.ttf but with only one partial success out of several tries [ i.e. one font was found, but not the other ]. I also tried updating all the files from fontspec at CTAN (latest is v2.6e, I think I initially had v2.6a for 2017) and running mktexlsr, but no change. At the moment I've gone back to my 7.10 system so that I can finish the outstanding PDFs, but this gives me no confidence that I will be able to update anything in the future. Any suggestions? Pretty please with sugar :) ĸen -- Truth, in front of her huge walk-in wardrobe, selected black leather boots with stiletto heels for such a barefaced truth. - Unseen Academicals -- http://lists.linuxfromscratch.org/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
