tar -xf ../lightdm-gtk-greeter-2.0.3.tar.gz &&
cd lightdm-gtk-greeter
should be lightdm-gtk-greeter-2.0.3

I just started a first try to build lightdm and I failed with a
configure-message

configure: error: Package requirements (liblightdm-gobject-1 >= 1.3.5)

Is perhaps a dependency missing in the Book-instructions ?
According to my logs, lightdm-1.24.0 installs liblightdm-gobject-1. Then
lightdm-gtk-greeter-2.0.3 uses it. Did you have gobject-introspection
installed when you built lightdm-1.24.0 ?
Better to use blfs-support so anyone can see the conversation.
