Thanks, I _am_ making some progress, but have more to try to compile urxvt 
before reporting.  These devs don't seem to have grasped the "Unix Principle"!

For a terminal emulator all I need is the standard Roman set.

I thought that was being done, but I'd never needed to use it.  It wasn't.
