John, that was your first mistake. When you begin you must download a copy of the book
for consistency throughout your build. The SVN version is very much a moving target,
liable to "switch horses in midstream". You need to get svn to download a copy
of what you started with. You're pretty far into it to start over, but next time go for
the stable version of the book.

We really recommend installing in /opt as that allows you to easily
remove an incomplete or bad install and start over.
