Thanks a lot! Okay, that does make a difference.
I've added the file in question to CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE, it is now:

CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="i915/glk_dmc_ver1_04.bin"

After compiling the kernel and booting, I get:

# dmesg | grep firware
[...] [drm] GuC: No firmware known for this platform!
[...] [drm] HuC: No firmware known for this platform!
[...] [drm] Finished loading DMC firmware i915/glk_dmc_ver1_04.bin (v1.4)
...

So that seems to be working to some degree. Not sure what to do about
the first two lines.

A couple of things. My first reaction is that your CPU does not support GuC/HuC. I don't know for sure, but that's what the messages seem to be saying. Typically from what I've seen in the past is that the driver specifies what firmware/version it is looking for.

Second, are you having any video issues?

Third, I found this web page that may help:

https://blogs.igalia.com/vjaquez/2017/12/07/enabling-huc-for-sklkbl-in-debiantesting/

It's specifically for Debian, so there may be some differences to your system.

Thanks a lot! I'm also starting to believe that my system doesn't support
GuC/HuC. I'm not experiencing any video issues (I haven't built xorg
yet)--actually, I don't see any noticeable performance improvement compared to
before. Thanks for sending the link, that was quite informative.
Greetings,

Hans
