Yes many times

Done that now

>su with PAM works for me if I am in the "wheel" group. If you are able to run
>"sudo", you can type "sudo su -" if needed to become root.

I can but 'sudo su' doesn't work. I get : 

sudo: effective uid is not 0, is /usr/bin/sudo on a file system with the 
'nosuid' option set or an NFS file system without root privileges?

Obvious answer : No
