I've now removed everything and then copied in the one line from the already-working .xinitrc of the jhalfs user, and my normal user can startx. And reading a diff of the output from strace was as hard as I expected - differing delays eventually cause the lines which are apparently unchanged (white in 'view' with my black background) to match the wrong places.
