Is anyone else seeing blank screens with current xscreensaver ?

I've updated all my recent systems to the current version, and when
it works it is great (freetype fonts). But often I'm seeing a
blank screen - note that the screen does not turn off, the monitors
are sure there is a display, but everything is black until I move
the mouse or hit a key.

People will know that I rebuild kernels more often than some people,
and at first I thought that a newer kernel, and something backported
to later 5.10 and 5.11 was the problem - but now my impression is
that after a while the saver just goes black.

Current data:

low-end skylake with intel graphics: this only gets used
infrequently (it's too slow), but with 5.10.17 xscreensaver seems to
work and to continue to work (been using it intermittently for a
couple of days).

AMD 3400G (Picasso) - I thought that I saw savers running with
5.11.5, but later things were black. With 5.12.0-rc{4,6} I never
saw a saver running. 5.10.17 worked on a brief test.

Intel haswell (using modesetting) - this is where my expectations
broke down:

first, 5.10.24 - screen just blanked

second, 5.10.17 - worked, then after briefly resuming the system it
again worked ok. I assumed this was 'good', started to build
something - the saver again ran. Used the mouse to see if the
build had finished (it hadn't), left it again. Came back, screen
 was black.

At this point I'm just asking if anyone else is seeing similar weird
behaviour ?
