Here's how you do what you ask:
1) Install your USB audio device.
2) Identify the exact name of this device by going to the system menu,
selecting "Settings" and then selecting "Control Panel" and activate the
"Sounds" menu item.
3) Once this dialog opens go to the "Audio" tab. The first control will be
a list box identifying the "Preferred Device" and you should have two
entries here. The first is likely the system sound card and the second will
be the USB device. Carefully note the exact name of the USB device -- on my
system it is literally "USB Audio Device" (without the quotation marks of
course). This exact name will serve as the "SynthPort" identifier in the
JFW.INI file in the "Synthesizers" section.
4) Once the USB (or any other type of secondary audio device) has been
exactly identified open your JFW.INI file, carefully noting the entries that
instruct JAWS to utilize the primary sound device. Copy these entries and
place them lower in the file -- carefully changing the "Synth" number to
reflect an added synthesizer. Here's how my entries appear, but remember
that I changed all subsequent entries to add one to each synth number:
Synth3Name=eloqUSB
Synth3LongName=Eloquence via USB for JAWS
Synth3Driver=eloq
Synth3Port=USB Audio Device
The critical entry is the "Synth#Port" where you MUST identify the name of
the secondary audio device as identified in Step 3 above. The port must
exactly match the name from that step and that is how JAWS will "know" to
speak through that device.
The "Synth#Name" is important because if you want to set up a desktop icon
or a menu item to execute JAWS via this secondary audio device that name
will be the value of the "/s" switch. (JFW.INI /seloqUSB) and so must be
unique from the "SynthName" for the primary device (eloq).
The "Synth#LongName" is used when you go to the JAWS "Languages/Change
Synthesizer" menu to use a different synthesizer -- it can be just about
anything you like.
The "Synth#Driver" value must be the same as the same entry for the primary
device because no matter the port you need to use the "eloq" driver.
Now, I've hinted that you'll want this sound device to be the secondary or
additional synthesizer. This is because you are better off using the
primary device for JAWS during boot. Once you decide to go to your radio
sites, you can then bring up the JAWS menu and elect to "Change Synthesizer"
before doing this. It's just something I prefer, to use the system device
during boot to minimize potential troubleshooting issues. If you need a
dissertation on my philosophy write me off-list and I'll provide a boring,
detailed writing explaining my position.
