Bill,

Everything you have said about how the virtual printer should work is
correct, but I have found that with OpenBook and WynnWizard there are times
when it will not work. I have not figured out when that is. It is clear
when the quality of the image is poor or the font is too busy or artsy. It
is almost as if the virtual printer cannot see the image and it treats the
page as being blank.

Now if anyone on this list can figure out why neither FS support or myself
cannot get the freedom printer installed on my work computer I will be
thrilled. But I will need to figure out some details about my problem
before I can post the problem here.

Annette

Subject: [Blind-Computing] KESI Virtual Printer In Theory

OK, I posted a private message to David concerning the KESI Virtual Printer
feature of Kurzweil and he urged me to post to the list. I have posted
several messages on this matter to the list, but I'm not sure if they were
Sufficiently clear.

First, I believe the KESI Virtual Printer debuted with Kurzweil 1000 Version
6.0, but it may have been Version 6.02. No matter, there are probably folks
out there without this feature because it wasn't available in the version
they have installed.

What is the KESI Virtual Printer feature?

This feature allows a user to "print" a document by specifying the "KESI
Virtual Printer" as the printer to run the job. In reality, this selection
will pass the formatted print job through the Optical Character Recognition
(OCR) software and launch Kurzweil 1000 as if it were actually scanning a
paper document. The step that's avoided here is actually creating a
hard-copy or paper copy of the document to then scan via normal procedures.
Instead a shortcut is deployed where the formatted print output is processed
immediately via the OCR and the Kurzweil 1000 reader.

How does the computer get this feature?

The KESI Virtual Printer is established as one of the printer options when
Kurzweil 1000 is installed. After installing Kurzweil 1000 you can go to
the Settings/Printers from the Main Menu and you'll be able to ascertain
that "KESI Virtual Printer" is indeed one of the available printers on the
system.

Is the KESI Virtual Printer guaranteed to always work?

Hmmm, apparently not! Just today I encountered several problems with the
document Lois had posted about on this list. The first problem is that it
seems the quality of the photocopy is so terrible (or they've used some
terribly fancy print font on the original document) that each of the 11 page
document reported "Poorly Recognized" while processing the document through
the OCR. That was ad enough, but then when I tried to save the
"printed/scanned" document Kurzweil crashed. The first problem could have
been overcome with some artful editing, but I couldn't save the output into
a file of any kind for subsequent editing. Very frustrating for sure!

Are there other "virtual printer" applications other than KESI Virtual
Printer?

Oh yes! From the thread on this list today it is obvious that Freedom
Scientific's Open Book has a similar feature. And there are other virtual
printer applications available as well. In fact, I just learned today that
"Solid Converter PDF" is also installed as a virtual printer -- imagine my
surprise when I went to Settings/Printers and discovered this.

Lois, you mind sending me that file again -- I'll try to pass it through
Solid Converter PDF and see if that works better.

So, in theory the KESI Virtual Printer should function as I had suggested
throughout the thread on Lois' PDF file. But it didn't and here I sit with
egg on my face and the text "F O O L" printed boldly on my forehead! Think
I'll take a picture, load it into a PDF and send it on to the list! Humph!
