There is a very important step in this process which I don't recall seeing mentioned as of yet. If you are recording a 4 track tape on to your system remember that the right channel will play backwards after the initial recording. This is why you need an audio editor and not just a simple recording program. You will need a program that can separate the 2 channels and manipulate them independently reversing the right channel so it plays correctly. This is why a program like sound recorder or even possibly CDEX wouldn't fill the bill. The cable you will need must have a plug that goes in to your system's sound card and on the other end 2 plugs to insert in to your stereo tape deck. Naturally if you're recording a tape of music that you got from a store the above steps will not be required at all.
