Denny, the only problem is that the outboard version uses up one of the
ports on your computer. Secondly, the head phone jack on the Express is one
of the weak points in the design. After relatively light use, it loosens up
to the point where it doesn't function any more. The DecTalk Express
employs a cable which has proprietary connectors, found rarely in any other
unit. If the cable does break, you will play hand ball in hell finding
another one. Finally, the pronunciation dictionaries on the DecTalk Express
are somewhat dated. I thought, as many people did, that the DecTalk was the
Cadillac of speech synthesizers. At one time, it was. But then, who needs
a 1990 Cadillac in 2007?
The DecTalk 32, a software version of the same unit is very good, much
better than its hardware counterpart. Which brings me to a question I would
like to ask a computer geek like you. What about dual sound cards? Can
they work in an ordinary PC environment? How difficult are they to set up
so that your Jaws uses one and the rest of the PC uses another?
Perhaps this should be an independent question. But if someone is using a
DecTalk 32, that might be a very useful piece of information.

John Justice But it doesn't offer the same flexibility as the independent
outboard unit.
