Dear David I have had similar quirky behaviour with the system tray.
If insert F11 does not work then windows key plus B sometimes does the trick in showing up the errant program. Use left and right cursor keys to move through the tray and then press enter to get into menu for that program. Apart from that the only thing I have found that works is re-booting.
