I normally use Media Player 9, but I'm pretty sure it's basically the same.
Either way, once I have a bunch of music playing (either by browsing in windows explorer, and using the Ctrl key so that I specifically have to hit the space key to select something, or by searching for a bunch of music by making sure I'm on the right place in the tree structure of Windows Explorer and then hitting Ctrl + F, and then basically hitting enter once I have whatever selected), I normally pause the playback, then go to the file menu, and select 'save now playing list as...', where it will prompt you for the name of the .wpl file, which is saved by default in my documents\my music\my playlists. After that, I sometimes use decent text editors like TextPal to actually go and edit/combine these files since they are basically relatively simple text/markup files where on roundabout line 9, the actual file listings will start. Just remember to turn WordWrap off no matter which editor software you use.
