What operating system do you have? I am sort of a web developer, and I run Windows XP pro, including the installation of it's sort of built-in IIS web/ftp/smtp server, and although I haven't recently played with it much, I don't think there are too many hassles relating to configuring/administering it, apart from some of the dialogue boxes not being 'perfect' when used with Jaws, but there are workarounds etc. that make it perfectly possible.
FWIW, I only really use my machine to do development on, and thereafter, the content etc. will get uploaded to other machines, but anyway...
