In the old days almost all the CDRom drives on computers had a small pin sized hole on the front, and they were there so that if it got stuck, you could basically stick a straightened out paperclip in there, and it would release the mechanism, so that you could then open the tray without any trouble, and when you then closed it again, it would click back into 'gear'.
Not sure if newer things still have this, and obviously it wouldn't be all that easy for a VI person to find that hole as such.
