Hello

I deliberately un-installed Vista and I am running Jaws 8 and XP pro but
there are circumstances in which I also can get the "dinging" sound when
navigating in the way you describe using Word in Vista. The problem appears
to happen most when the screen is "complicated" by help and task panes
typically on the right hand side of the Word window.

. This will happen for example in Word if you open the styles menu and
apply a Heading style . Doing this will cause Jaws to ding every time I
use the up and down cursor key.

Basically I have found the following procedure sorts the problem.

1. Make sure that Word is maximised with no task panes open.
2. Alt - Tab away from Word and back again.
. This normally sorts the problem but things to try also are
Press Insert + Escape to refresh the screen.
As a last resort unload Jaws with Insert + F4 and then reload with a short
cut key.

To avoid the dings sound with Jaws in Word

1. Pres Alt Space and then X to maximise the window.
2. Make sure that no help style or formatting window is open on the right
side of the screen. You can do this by pressing control + F1 which toggles
the opening and closure of this window. If you cannot see this then you
might need sighted help or simply experiment.

3. If you want to apply for example Heading Styles use shortcut keys rather
than the menus. As I say the menu commands can open panes on the right hand
side of Word which seems to create many of this dings sound problem.

4. So for example if you want heading style 1.
Press Control plus Alt plus 1.
Heading style 2 is control plus alt plus 2 and so on.

Doing this will prevent any dings coming out of Jaws when applying Heading
styles.

Other shortcut keys should avoid other pane problems.

Hope this helps

David Griffith

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Vista ding

Hi Friends,
I'm running Vista on a Dell laptop.
As I use navigation keys I frequently hear a ding sound.
This happens even if I am just using the arrow key to move from one line to
the next in a Word document or an e-mail.
Sometimes I can understand why it does that, as for example, when I reach
the top of a list view of files, but other times it doesn't make sense.
Can someone explain this to me?
Blessings,
Tom
