Picked this up from another list. http://www.magicjack.com/site/index.html What it amounts to is another VOIP service. Many people are raving about it,but below are some things to consider before diving in head first. I don't have any personal experience with it,but these are basic facts concerning non-standard phone service.
1. This service is similar to Skype, in that it is an internet-based phone service. also known as VOIP. Voice over internet protocol. 2. It requires a computer, and a broadband connection. i e cable or DSL. 3. It also requires power in some form. That being said, consider this: 1. If your broadband connection fails to be active for any reason, no service. If your broadband connection happens to be DSL supplied by your current phone service provider, discontinuing that phone service will discontinue your DSL service, therefore disabling your new service thru Magic Jack. Likewise, if your broadband connection is supplied by your cable provider, than when your cable service fails for any reason, so will the phone service. 2. If your computer is not turned on more than likely there will be no power to the USB port that the Magic Jack device is plugged into. Also, if you experience a power failure, again, no service. This is not a replacement for standard phone service, it's meant as an alternative for long-distance calling. So far, the biggest advantages I 've seen over Skype are this: 1. The initial annual cost is lower than Skype 2. You don't need to sit at the computer and talk, you can use an ordinary phone, without the purchase of additional hardware. Skype is a software based service, Magic Jack appears to be a hardware based service. Not Magic, science and technology. HTH, Richard Q.
