Earlier today I received the error msg intermittently. Now, every time I try and burn a cd the error is happening and within a shorter time period. I suspect it is the drive. I've used it a lot! Hi Kathy, a Google search revealed that there are a few causes for this problem. The first and most common problem is that the burner is dying. I guess it would all depend on how old the burner is. Before you do anything drastic like buying a new burner, there are other factors that could give you this message also. First and foremost, is the type of media you are using of good quality, or the no-name brand that you can get at any dollar store for 10 for a dollar. If the latter, you may want to switch up to a higher quality type of CD media. It would also depend on how often you are getting this message. Are you getting it occasionally, once in a blue moon, maybe after you've burned 100 discs and you get the message, then burn another 100 and get the message again. Does it happen more frequently than that, meaning, do you get this error message every once in while, but it's tolerable, or does it happen very frequently, where you're getting it possibly 4 or more times within the span of 10 or so discs burned, or maybe more often than that? If you know you are using a very good brand of media, then obviously, the CD's are not your problem. Another thing you may want to check is the drivers and any updates that may be available for your burner, as this was another common problem causing this error. This can especially happen if the computer or laptop is new, or not that old, drivers may come available that weren't previously available, so the drivers would have to be updated to the newest version. The easiest way of doing this is to perform a Windows or Microsoft update for your system, and doing a custom scan for updates. Once done, check the drivers section of the updates, and see if there are any available. The last simple solution to your problem is a dirty lens that needs to be cleaned. You can purchase commercial cleaning products that will clean the burner lens, and these usually cost in the 5 to 20 dollar range for the really good ones. Try cleaning the lens and see if that fixes the problem. Another common problem mentioned, and this is the one that's a bit more difficult and scary, is a firmware update. The reason I say difficult, is because if you run a firmware update, and your burner doesn't need one or you flash it with the wrong firmware, it could stop working altogether, at which point there's nothing that I know of you can do to restore it. Of course, depending on how often you are getting the error message, in other words, every time you try to burn a disc, then you really have nothing to lose, assuming you've tried all the other solutions I've mentioned above. Now, if the worst case scenario has happened, and you have to replace the drive completely, I wouldn't mind that too much. If you're the adventurous type, burners are very easy to install, even on a laptop. Just loosen a few screws, and boom, the burner just slides right out, unplug it, and plug the new one in, and let windows automatically detect it. If you aren't that adventurous, they are pretty cheap to install, as long as you don't take it to the geek squad, as they are way too over priced, not for the parts, as I usually recommend that people buy their parts from a best buy somewhere, or another big box store, as they have sales on this kind of stuff all the time, and they're usually good quality, then take it to a small computer shop, and have them install it for you. Smaller guys want the repeat business, as that is what keeps them going, so they don't charge you an arm and a leg for that kind of service. In some cases, They will even charge you less, if you buy the parts from them, sort of like a package deal. Oh, and most of the time, you get the pity discount, you know the one, where they feel sorry for you because you're blind or visually impaired, so they don't charge you as much? Hey, don't knock it, it gets me a good many free things from various places I go to. Smile. In any case, do the smaller things I've described above, and worse case scenario, take that puppy in for repair. By the way, let us know how old the system is, and what kind of system it is, and maybe we can perform a search on the company's web site, to see if this is a known issue, as this can sometimes be the case.
