Hi Folks, With permission from Rick, I just gleaned the following link from the Top Tech Tidbits Newsletter.
In essence, there was a seminar, at this years CSUN Conference, comparing three different operating systems, namely Windows XP, Linux, using Gnome and the MAC OS Leopard, and using three different screen readers for each, those being Jaws for Windows, Orca for the Linux platform, an open sourced screen reader, and Voiceover for the MAC platform, respectively, the last two being free screen readers. The title of the seminar is titled Duelling Operating Systems, and I've listened to about an hour of it so far. To be honest, I am very disappointed by the representation by the person using the Windows system and Jaws. Each of the three individuals were touted as being power users of each OS and screen reader, but it just seems to me that these people didn't know what they were doing. Up to what I've listened to, they were asked to subscribe to a particular blog from Blind Confidential. To me, this would be an easy process, however, the three individuals seemed like they were having a really hard time of it, and some of the keystrokes they used were going the long way around. To be honest, this was only one task of many these people were asked to perform, and I have not listened to the rest of the recording to judge how adept these people actually were with their respective systems. All of them were using laptops,, as one would expect at a conference of this type, but one was using an external blue tooth keyboard, that being the user with Jaws. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with their performance, but again, I have yet to listen to the other 55 minutes of the recording. The total time of the recording is just under 2 hours, and is pretty clear, so you can judge for yourselves how well they did. I have to admit, from what I've listened to so far, the clarity of the Voiceover software for the MAC Leopard was fairly clear, as good as Microsoft's Narrator for Windows Vista, and quite functional, save for the user's ability. Suffice it to say, you can get the recording at the following link: http://dcnightout.com/?p=137 I think a more appropriate seminar for CSUN would have been Duelling Screen Readers, but I wasn't there, so I can't really judge what they did. I should also mention that this seminar is hosted by Jamal Masri, one of the more prolific personalities in the Blind Computing community. Good listening.
