Sounds like you have a corrupt user account in XP. You can either copy all
your data to the new user account and disable the old account or try a
system restore. It all depends on how involved you want to get with this
fix.

Here is a link from the Locker Gnome, Chris Pirillo, outlining the steps
necessary.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Subject: [Blind-Computing] CHANGING my USER NAME

> Hi to all on list:
>
> My name is Hal and I just joined yesterday. A little about myself, I am a
> blind computer user living in Canada, my screen reader is Jaws and I use
> Windows XP as my operating system. I enjoy computers, music, reading, and
> lawn bowling.
>
> An interesting thing happened to me the other day. Basically my user
> profile appears to have gotten corrupted. How this happened, I don't know
> except to say that it all began right after I lost all sounds and jfw 9.0
> wouldn't talk. The only thing I remember is that I held down on the power
> button on my laptop's docking bay for 10 seconds until the system shut
> off. Perhaps I hit an odd keystroke before that I just don't know.
> Whenever I'd boot my system, both my Jaws and Windows settings weren't
> retained; it was like Windows lost the ability to remember the changes I
> made. I like to use Windows classic start menu but at that point, Windows
> had other ideas; I'd have to make the change every time. Can anyone here
> relate to this? My dad, who is very knowledgeable about computers saw that
> Windows was unable to locate my user profile. He was able to create
> another account for me, it's Haliard. For now, when I boot my computer
> Jaws comes up with the log on screen, and I am given the choice to log in
> as either Hal Pearson, or Haliard. If I log in as Hal Pearson, my settings
> will not stick so I log in as Haliard. Once I get rid of the corrupt files
> and throw away the old Hal Pearson account, I'd like to rename Haliard,
> back to Hal Pearson. So when I arrow up and down in my start menu, I see,
> "log off Haliard..." Where do I go to make this change so I'll then see
> "log off Hal Pearson"? I can make an educated guess. I went exploring in
> control panel and found user accounts. Do I make the change there?
