Hi John,
I need to know exactly which registry tool we are talking about,
before I can tell you anything specific.
Yes, there is always a risk involved with modifying the registry, and it
absolutely should be backed up before doing so,
or there should be a contengency plan in place
such as a workable means of restoring the entire operating system,.
I have hacked the registry on numerous occasions, for many different things,
and have never had a problem,
but I would not recommend it to the average user.
Generally speaking, the registry can be restored without sighted help, but
only if the system is bootable.
Bottom line is this:
Anytime you make modifications to the operating system, there is a chance of
unexpected, and undesireable side-effects.
These days, most registry cleaning tools are safe, and have good results.
If you need more, let me know.
HTH,

Subject: [Blind-Computing] REGISTRY SCRUBBING PROGRAM

On the Blind-Computing programs page, there is a tool which prunes the
registry. I have questions about it before I use the tool.

When I ran the program it found about 200 registry items which seem to have
no real purpose. The tool requires that you check each item to confirm it
can be removed. But at the top of the page, is a warning statement
indicating that the registry should be backed up before the tool is used.
That makes sense. But how is that done? Secondly, if you use the tool and
it does remove something vital, how can you get your system back up and
running?
How reliable is the tool? If someone were to simply check the All option,
how much risk is there that the computer would be disabled?

Rick, I found this on your page. It looks like an effective tool but I am a
bit concerned. Can you give me any input on this?
