It sounds really like you need to get another external or preferably another internal drive as I have found these more reliable and longer lasting.
Examine your C drive and make sure that there are no data folders there like My Documents or My Music and so on. If so , move these to your J Drive. If you cannot do this I would seriously consider backing up everything you have of value on your C and J drive before you do anything else. Use DVD discs if nothing else is to hand. Once you have done this then you can go to the properties of your C and J drive and you will find 2 utilities which may help you. The first is disc cleanup. This may help you if you have unnecessary files cluttering up your drive. Do not expect to retrieve huge amounts of space. The second utility is a disc compression utility. You can tab to this and check the box which will include this as a process in the disc cleanup. I do not personally like this technology because of problems I had with old computers years ago. If I had to go this route I would just zip up files manually on the disc after backing them up unzipped onto a DVD. All in all though I think your best course is to get a bigger internal drive. These are not hugely expensive and a computer engineer will often give a good rate to do this for you if you let him or her provide the drive for you. Check which drive they are going to put in and research on Google to make sure it is OK first.
