Don't know if it's too usable, but, for example, when using NVDA, you get tones sort of telling you where the mouse cursor is on the screen, as well as getting told what is currently under the cursor.
Also, using a piece of software called the vOICe - SeeingWithSound, you can get it to return an audio representation of whats under the mouse cursor area, which is along the lines of something called sensory substitution. There are also a couple of computer games out there designed to be played by VI people using a mouse where you also react to stereo/up-down tones, and they're also partly supposed to train you to use things like that, as well as maybe getting used to actually using the mouse. To be honest though, although I have one here, I hardly ever do anything with apart from letting other sighted people do one or two minor things on my machines etc. etc., but they're cheap enough, so might be worth 'looking' into/playing around with.
