Fair enough. Just that I had also tried implementing a VMWare version of linux at some stage to try out some web hosting options, but I also couldn't get it to work, and although that was a while ago, not sure if the newer version of VMWare are much better, or whether there are alternatives, so, honestly, depending on what you want to do with the linux machine, might just be best to get hold of an old second-hand machine and load Ubuntu on it, and then keep your windows machine for other things if you want them to run at the same time, or alternatively you could always look into a dual-boot type of machine, but that's also not something I've looked into recently.
Finally, although you might not be able to really purchase stuff from there, they're mostly too expensive for guys my side of the world (South Africa), so I know how it feels.
