I believe that the labeling of the "buttons in Flash players on the web are
left up to the web developer. They must provide something like an Alt tag
when creating the object. Otherwise it seems to get assigned a sequential
number, such as "3" or "4" and so on. I am not sure if this is assigned by
Flash, MSAA, or JAWS when reading the MSAA information passed by the Flash
object. Some sites do a reasonable job in this regard, like
SuperNovaTube.com. This French site even tries to assign hotkeys. But,
unfortunately, most sites I have found have spent no effort in this area.
Web sites have no excuse for this except ignorance. Major sites such as
Google Video, FoxNews, and YouTube certainly have the resources to do this
seemingly simple matter. Adobe claims to provide the capability to provide
accessibility in this product on their web site, but they must not stress it
enough or provide accessibility in their examples. Even on their web site,
the document describing accessibility was written in 2005 by Macromedia
(before Flash was purchased by Adobe). This may be the next big stumbling
block for the blind and visually impaired, similar to the original web and
images in HTML! A major accessibility awareness campaign needs to address
this rapidly growing product. Flash is being used for everything on the web
these days! Even the site I use to test my DSL speed, Speakeasy.com,
heavily use Flash. This is not just a video playback issue, which many
consider not to be useful to the blind anyway! I think even Freedom
Scientific has some culpability too. Activating these "buttons", once their
function has been determined, seems to be unreliable unless you root the
JAWS cursor to the PC cursor before pressing the space bar. I have spent a
lot of time recently researching this problem, finding these offensive
sites, and providing email feedback to the site developers. Perhaps a few
emails is not enough, and they will not pay attention until a few class
action lawsuits are pursued. Perhaps a tool like Webvisum could help in the
future to label these sites and share with the community. But I don't think
this function works within Flash objects right now.
