Not in the computer itsself as such, but you also mentioned a UPS in that 
post.

Honestly, the simplest is to get a technician to look at the physical 
battery since there are generic ones as well which would be a bit cheaper 
than the original ones from the motherboard manufacturer.

Basically, when these batteries lose their charge, then you might find that 
if you turn off the computer for a bit, then when you try turn it on, it 
wouldn't have remembered what hard drives etc. it had in since those 
settings are stored in the BIOS memory, and that might stop it from booting 
up.  Some later computers would automatically scan them, reset the values, 
and carry on from there, but not sure if/when that became more common 
anyway.

Another thing that could occasionally cause these settings to be lost was in 
fact static electricity - either transmitted by simply touching the casing 
if it wasn't properly insulated from the internals, or if the casing was 
left open for whatever reasons, but this might not be relevant at all 
nowadays.
