I've sent Patricia an article about how to deal with problems that occur when the Normal.dot file gets corrupted. This seems to produce a variety of problems. The normal.dot file is the template Word loads automatically every time it starts. When this gets corrupted, all kinds of strange things happen. If anyone wants a copy of the article, let me know.
