Your main page will require a name like index.htm or index.html or index.php depending on what kind of scripts you might end up running. The fact is it must be called index, that is a fact. There are other extensions as well but I simply use index.php because I use some pearl scripting for my hit counter and some java for the clock. Your web provider will instruct you where to place your files normally in the public_html folder or the WWW folder often enough. So far as coding is concerned there are a number of free tutorials out there that will instruct you on the proper method of creating a web page. Also it is possible to exam the code on other web sites for hints on how to do such things. The fact is though it seems to me that most web masters simply use HTML generators which I do not do myself.
