Hi Brian, No, you do not need to check the box for compression. Enabling compression on the drive is said to save disk space, but files would have to be decompressed when accessing them, slowing down overall performance. If you are running Windows XP, just perform a standard format, using the NTFS file system. HTH, Richard Q.
