How about this as a possible issue? Her computer is a few years old and it
could be that I used an incompatible disk for her drive? If this was the
case why would it: 1) not show any files or folders, and 2) display a
strange i/o error message? Why also would it refuse to spin up yet it was
trying to.

Yeah, well that was my intensions, to install what was on the CD then give
the CD to her. This of course didn't happen due to the possibly dead DVD
drive. It was actually a DVD I was going to give her, but so what.
