There is an oddity in the way Outlook 2003  treats links in its emails. 
I use plain text emails and what I find is that if you press enter when the
cursor is on the   http part of the link address  nothing will happen.
However if you cursor along until jaws is reading the www or indeed any
other part of the link pressing enter will execute the link just fine.

Perhaps  your friend should  try this.
