Francis, There is a free program called PDF Creator. I believe that I picked it up from SourceForge.
Anyway, when you install the program, it adds a virtual PDF printer to your list of available printers. Then, when you want to make a PDF version of the printout from any application (including word), you simply print to file using the PDF Creator printer as the selected printer. If you can't find the download, write to me off-list and I can send you the installer. I've found this program to be very useful and accessible.
