Joan,
It seems like there might be something going on here besides just a
change in the power options.
However, since that seemed to be a connection with what you were doing,
go back to power options and tab through each of the options.  In the
combo boxes explore each of the possibilities available to you, to see if
something looks out of place.
I'm using a desk top, so I can't check all of them out, but I assume the
power scheme should be set to "laptop" for your use.
There are three tabs here, so Control tab through each of them.
There is a combo box for "when I push the power button"
I recommend you choose the option, "Do nothing"
That doesn't mean nothing will happen.  It simply means that if you
accidentally hit the power button when your computer is on, it will not
shut off immediately.  If you choose the "do nothing" option, you can
still shut off the computer with the power button by holding it down for
at least four seconds.
If you try changing options and still have the problem, then this problem
has probably not occurred because of changes you made in power options.
