AVG also does the same thing. In fact, if you have a firewall through your
anti-virus program it will over ride the windows firewall. You only need one
firewall and usually it's the one associated with your anti-virus program.
I was just poking around in windows firewall few minutes ago and it's
unchecked since I run AVG 8 internet full suite and it uses that programs
firewall.

The fact that your firewall is actually on by the time you check is I
guess
reassuring. Do you have any 3rd party firewalls or internet security
suites
running? Norton or AVG etc?
I think I have heard this message in the past on start up with a security
program loading. I think it was part of the software sorting out the 2
Firewall settings. I cannot remember which one it was, whichever one it
was
it seemed to temporarily makes XP think there is no firewall at start-up.
As I am typing this I think I remember it might be a feature of Norton.
If you do have a third party firewall it might be worth checking with
the
software provider whether what you are hearing is not, in fact , a normal
part of the software start-up.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] configuring windows firewall
Hi, everyone. I've been getting a strange message when I boot up my
computer and go right to the internet or outlook express. It says
something
like "no firewall is on. Your computer may be at risk". It also says
"click this balloon to fix the problem". Someone on another list said to
check the box that says firewall is on. It's already checked. I even
restarted the computer, tried to go right to outlook express and still got
the same message. Is there something more I need to do to make windows
firewall work properly?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Rosemarie
