Marvin, I've been a Skype user for several years. In the tools/options settings, I believe it's under sounds. There is a check box that says, "allow skype to adjust my audio device." Do not have this checked! Well, you can if it's your only option, but it really messes with your microphone settings. The Actual level settings for your mic are made in your sound card's properties. Since you have vista, you can find your soundcard by going to control panel, then look for the name of your soundcard. Mine is realTech. But if you aren't comfortable with doing this, then you can allow skype to automatically set your mic levels. I have my mic levels fixed in the soundcard because I use it for other purposes other than talking on skype. Good luck to you.
