I used to use a full-sized keyboard with my laptop and I still had the setting on laptop keyboard layout. Everything worked fine. I could use the num pad but the laptop key commands were also in affect. I would assume getting a USB num pad for the laptop would be similar, where you could keep it set on laptop keyboard layout and still have use of the num pad that you plug in.
