Thanks, David. I'll take a look at this over the weekend...Just got an email from Dell that my laptop, which was set to ship today, has been delayed a week for some unspecified reason. So, I'll have plenty of time to check this out.
Not sure how I missed this document...The "tips and Tricks" section of jaws-users.com was the first place I looked. :) -----Original Message----- From: David Ferrin <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2009 1:10 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring Data From A PC to a Laptop Wes, try out the information at the following address: http://www.jaws-users.com/programs/Windows/tfrcable_x86.html With luck it will answer all of your questions. It's around 18 pages of documentation and a download link. I know because I coded the page and it took me a couple of days to do it. Recently, my wife and I bought new laptops from Dell to replace our slowing down/dying desktop. The desktop runs XP and the laptops both run Vista. I'm using JAWS 10, and my wife is sighted and does not use JAWS, but i do a lot of the computer maintenance for both of us. So, here are my questions...It's been a while since I've done this, and the last upgrade was going from Windows 98 to XP, and was a bit nightmarish. First, how can I easily move all my Outlook 2003 data from the desktop to my laptop, which will be running Outlook 2007? I know moving the .PST files will move my folders and messages, but what about my address book/contacts? Second, I found an article on moving all my Firefox settings, including bookmarks and saved passwords over. Is the process the same for moving the favorites and passwords stored in Internet Explorer 7? The Firefox article just told me to go into the specific user's application data\firefox folder and do it from there...Guessing I'd do the same with IE. What about the Windows password list? Is this different? Where do I find it, and how do I move those? For instance, it seems the computer stores the password for NLS's digital download pilot site (www.nlstalkingbooks.org/dtb) differently than it does when it asks me if I want IE or Firefox to remember my GMail or Facebook password. Finally, my wife uses Outlook Express for her email needs. It doesn't appear to be as straightforward as Outlook to back up and restore to a new computer or profile. How would I do this, or CAN it be done? For our other software and docs, I think I've figured out what to do...It's a lot of moving stuff to the external hard drive and putting it on the appropriate computer, re-installing software that I've downloaded from the web...No big deal. Sorry this is a bit long, but I figured this all tied together and should go in one message. My next one may be a bit more complex. :) Wes Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [email protected] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [email protected] Use the following address in order to contact the management team [email protected] If you wish to join the JAWS Users List send a blank email to the following address: [email protected] Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [email protected] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [email protected] Use the following address in order to contact the management team [email protected] If you wish to join the JAWS Users List send a blank email to the following address: [email protected] Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to [email protected] For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: [email protected] Use the following address in order to contact the management team [email protected] If you wish to join the JAWS Users List send a blank email to the following address: [email protected]
