Yup, for things like skype, I use a PC microphone, and I plug it into my microphone socket, which is just mono, but when I want to record things like tapes etc., I normally plug the RCA cable which supports stereo etc. into my computers proper line in socket, and use audacity, which also allows me to apply effects like noise reduction, amplification etc., and lets me clip pieces out of recordings.

Stay well

Subject: [Blind-Computing] laptop computers and microphones.

Michael,
I just got a new computer myself and I haven't tried using the microphone yet. Like yours, my unit will require an external microphone rather than a built in one. I do seem to remember that computers use a certain type of microphone. If your particular choice wasn't designed for computer use, it may not be correctly wired for that kind of input. I'm not familiar with that particular kind of program. When I want to record, I use either Real Player or Gold Wave. Both of those programs make it quite easy to set up and use a microphone. David has several other programs in the Jaws-Users web page called Programs. The recorder you mentioned is the one which comes with Windows XP isn't it? If so, I have never heard of anyone getting success when using that built in recorder. There may be buttons or other controls on the screen which Jaws isn't reading. I know that isn't much help right now, but make sure that the microphone you purchased is the kind that works with computers.
Most of the time, those microphones do not need a battery.
