Hi Tom:

I have also heard people say not to plug a UPS into a surge suppressor. And also not to plug a surge strip into a UPS. I have not seen the technical reasoning behind either statement. I can somewhat understand that plugging a surge strip into a UPS could more easily lead to overloading the power capacity of the UPS, by someone who is not aware of such limitations.

I have my APC UPS (which is now 15 years old) plugged into a high quality surge suppressor strip. That allows me to turn-off the AC to the UPS each night, which shuts down the trickle charger that is always operating in the UPS, keeping the battery at peak charge.

In the area where we live, the UPS unit gets a good workout and has never failed me. I have a similar unit attached to the TiVo. The batteries in these units last about 5 years and are cheap and easy to replace. At the last company I worked for, we literally had hundreds of these units, protecting computer and networking equipment, telephone systems and many pieces of manufacturing equipment. Some were plugged into surge strips or surge outlets and many had surge strips plugged into the UPS units. I don't remember ever having a problem with a single unit. All UPS units that were not attached to continuous monitoring systems were tested on a semi-annual basis to check the condition of their batteries. I think that attaching your desktop computer to a good UPS unit is cheap insurance.

I've heard that one should not plug a battery back up into a surge
suppressor.
Is this tru, and is it a big deal??
And if it is true, does anyone know the reason?
Blessings,
Tom
