Hello all,
Before I unvail this cool new feature, May I kindly remind you for those
still using the beta of Windows 7 (not the RC), This is your final chance to
either:
1. Upgrade to the Windows 7 RC, or
2. Reinstall your previous version of Windows.
This is because from next week (August 1), the beta will completely stop
working and therefore it would be difficult to impossible to restore your
files after a clean install, unless you back up before the beta expires. I
think most of you will be on the RC by now, but I can't assume this is the
case, so hence this reminder.
Now on to the cool new feature. I've been playing around with the idea of
creating, mounting, and, in Ultimate or Enterprise only, booting a VHD
(virtual hard disk). All this can be unvailed when you open Disk Management.
On the actions menu, you'll see options to "create VHD", "attach VHD", and,
if a VHD is already attached, "Detach VHD". Once the VHD is attached, you
can then allocate a new partition, which appears as a standard physical
drive, to the system. I think this is a great new feature, particularly for
those like me who are virtualization fanatics, as well as the ability to
copy individual files or folders from a system image, which is apparently
created in VHD format. For those who will be using Home Premium and
Professional, it is possible to create, attach, and even mount a VHD, but
not boot from one, but no doubt there'll be hacks for this since once the
VHD is mounted to the system it acts and appears as an additional physical
disk.
So I hope you enjoy my discovery, and hope you get a play around during your
time with the RC, and of course when you eventually get your final product.
Enjoy!
